Facelift Cost: The Surgeon's Fee, the Full Bill, and the Add-Ons That Move It

9 min readUpdated October 2026ASPS 2024 fee data
Bottom line

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2024 survey puts the US surgeon fee for a facelift at $12,000 to $19,000 (USD), but that figure excludes anesthesia, the operating room and other related costs. Most patients who say "facelift" also want neck, brow or eyelid work, each with its own surgeon fee. To compare quotes fairly, list every area treated and every bill attached to it.

"How much is a facelift?" is a question with a trap built into it. The figure most people find first is a surgeon's fee, and a surgeon's fee is only part of what a facelift costs. On top of that, "facelift" is often a shorthand for a combination of operations on the face, neck, brow and eyelids, each with its own price. This guide separates those layers so you can tell what a quoted number actually covers.

Start with the surgeon's fee, and know what it leaves out

The most widely cited US reference is the annual fee survey from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Its 2024 figures give a facelift (rhytidectomy) surgeon or physician fee range of $12,000 to $19,000 (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2024 average surgeon/physician fees, USD). ASPS describes these ranges as an aggregate projection built from averages its surveyed members submitted.

That number is the surgeon's professional fee. A facelift is usually performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation in an accredited operating room, so the full bill also carries an anesthesia charge and a facility charge, plus pre-operative testing, garments and medication. Those lines are not in the survey figure. When you compare a US surgeon-fee range with an all-inclusive quote from somewhere else, you are comparing a partial number with a complete one.

Apples to apples. If a clinic abroad quotes one bundled figure and a US practice quotes a surgeon fee, ask the US practice for its anesthesia and facility estimates before deciding which is cheaper. Otherwise the comparison flatters the US price.

A facelift is usually several procedures

A traditional facelift addresses the lower face and jawline. Many patients who ask for a facelift also want work on the neck, the forehead or the eyelids, and every added area adds operating time, anesthesia time and a separate surgical fee. The ASPS survey lists these related procedures separately:

Combining procedures does not mean simply adding the fees. Surgeons often price a combination below the sum of its parts, because some of the setup and anesthesia time is shared. But the total still rises with every area you add, and so does time under anesthesia, which is both a cost and a safety consideration your surgeon should discuss with you.

What makes one facelift cost more than another

Technique and depth

Facelift techniques range from limited "mini" procedures that tighten skin over a smaller area to deeper approaches that reposition the underlying muscle and connective tissue layers. Deeper work generally takes longer. Longer operations increase anesthesia and facility costs even if the surgeon's fee were held constant.

Revision versus first-time surgery

A secondary facelift, on a face that has already been operated on, can involve scar tissue and altered anatomy. Expect a revision to be priced individually after an in-person evaluation.

Setting and overnight care

Some patients go home the same day; others stay overnight for monitoring, or spend the first night in an aftercare facility with nursing. An overnight stay or private nurse is a separate line you should see on any honest quote.

Geography and demand

Surgeon fees vary between cities and between countries. The ASPS figure is a national US aggregate, so a practice in a high-cost metro area may sit above it, and a smaller market may sit below it.

How to read a fee survey without being misled by it

Survey ranges are useful as orientation, not as a price promise. A few cautions apply to any fee survey, including the ASPS one:

Use the survey to sanity-check a quote that looks far out of line, then rely on itemized written estimates for the actual decision.

Building your own facelift budget

Use this worksheet to turn any quote into a full figure. Fill each line with what you are actually told in writing; leave it blank, and keep asking, if a clinic will not say.

Travel and the recovery window

Facial surgery is visible surgery. Swelling and bruising are expected for a period afterward, and stitches need to come out. If you are traveling for a facelift, that recovery window drives your accommodation budget and your return date. Ask the surgeon when they expect to remove sutures and when they consider it reasonable for you to fly. Those two dates, not the surgery date, decide how many nights you are paying for.

Plan for follow-up at home as well. A local physician may not want to manage complications from surgery performed elsewhere, and if they do, the visits are usually billed separately. Agree on a remote follow-up arrangement with the operating surgeon before you leave.

Questions that change the price

Why a lower facelift price is not automatically a bargain

Because a facelift bundles several decisions, a low headline price can mean a smaller operation rather than a cheaper version of the same one. A "mini lift" quote is not comparable with a deep-plane facelift and neck lift quote, even if both are called a facelift in the advertising. Compare the plan first, the price second. The cheapest quote that treats the wrong areas is still the wrong purchase.

Credentials matter here too. Facial anatomy carries nerves that control expression, and the experience of the surgeon is part of what you are paying for. Verify board certification and licensing in the country where the operation takes place before comparing totals at all.

Frequently Asked

What is the average surgeon fee for a facelift?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2024 survey gives a US surgeon or physician fee range of $12,000 to $19,000 for a facelift. It is an aggregate projection from member-reported averages and does not include anesthesia or facility charges.

Is a neck lift included in a facelift price?

Not necessarily. ASPS lists the neck lift as a separate procedure with its own 2024 surgeon fee range of $7,500 to $13,000. Ask whether a quoted facelift treats the neck, or whether that is an additional procedure.

Why do facelift quotes vary so much?

Quotes differ in which areas are treated, how deep the technique goes, how long the operation takes, whether you stay overnight and where the surgeon practices. A mini lift and a deep facelift with neck work are different operations even under the same name.

How long should I stay if I travel for a facelift?

Ask the surgeon when sutures come out and when they are comfortable with you flying. Those dates set your trip length and lodging budget more than the surgery date does.

Does combining eyelid surgery with a facelift save money?

Combining procedures can lower the price compared with having them separately, because some setup and anesthesia time is shared. The total still rises with each area added, and longer anesthesia time should be discussed with your surgeon.
